Jens Stoltenberg, the NATO Secretary General, on Wednesday welcomed Georgia’s humanitarian and financial aid to Ukraine amid the ongoing war in the country, as well as hosting “thousands of Ukrainian refugees” in Georgia.

Speaking at the press briefing with Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze in Brussels, Stoltenberg highlighted Georgia as “a close NATO partner” and noted the Alliance “fully supported” the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, continuing to call on Russia to “reverse the recognition of Georgian territories as independent states”.

Any threats by Russia to annex Georgia’s occupied regions are unacceptable”, the NATO Sec Gen stressed.

NATO official said he had discussed the security situation in the Black Sea region at the meeting with Kobakhidze and emphasised Russia’s war against Ukraine posed “substantial risks” to the freedom of navigation in the region, while also impacting food security around the world.

Stoltenberg welcomed the efforts of “Allies [of the Alliance] working to demine the Black Sea, making it safer for navigation and commerce”.
