Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze and Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze on Wednesday met with players of the Georgian national football team in Düsseldorf, ahead of the kick-off of the UEFA European Football Championship in Germany this week.

The Government Administration said the Prime Minister wished the team success and emphasised the “historic victory” over Greece back in May that secured the team’s first-ever spot in a major football tournament, saying the result had “united the country”.

Kobakhidze also told the national team he would be “along numerous Georgian spectators” supporting them from the stands at the Championship.

The Prime Minister also shared the Government’s plans to develop sports infrastructure across the country and noted plans for construction of a new, 70,000-capacity stadium for the capital city of Tbilisi.

Mayor Kaladze also wished the team success at the Championship, where they will compete in Group F with Portugal, Turkey and the Czech Republic. The first match for the squad will come against Turkey on June 18.
