The project for the construction of a new, 70,000-capacity stadium in Georgia’s capital Tbilisi was discussed on Saturday at a meeting of the Georgian Government’s Interagency Commission led by Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze.

The Commission reviewed prospective locations for the stadium, along with infrastructural, transport, and logistics matters pertaining to construction, the Government Administration said.

Members of the Commission noted the adaptability of the project to host tournaments in various sports and requirements to be met for hosting “high-level” international matches could engage UEFA representatives in the process.

Kobakhidze was briefed by presidents of the national Football and Rugby Federations around the subject and emphasised the implementation of the project had a “special importance” from his Government.

The Government Administration also said the stadium would enable the country to apply for hosting rights for the 2028 final of the UEFA Champions League and “other top-level tournaments”.
