The United Nations Women on Monday announced the launch of a $565,000 project to empower 480 Ukrainian refugee women and girls living in Georgia, Slovakia and Poland with the support of the Japanese Government.

The organisation noted over 11 million people had fled Ukraine due to the ongoing war with Russia since February 2022, and about 80 percent of them were expected to remain in their host countries for an extended period.

The body said these refugees faced “significant challenges”, including labour market integration, social pressures, and long-term housing issues. The project aimed to address these challenges and help refugees overcome them.

The project component that will be implemented in Georgia aims to improve skills of Ukrainian refugees in information and communication technologies and provide them with access to digital activities on both local and international levels.

The UN Women said the project in Georgia also focused on improving the psychological health and resilience of Ukrainian women living in the country and increasing the gender sensitivity of humanitarian interventions implemented by the Georgian Government.
