Henrik Landerholm, Sweden’s National Security Advisor, on Monday said it was “absolutely necessary” to open the prospect of joining the European Union for Georgia.

In an interview with the Voice of America, Landerholm noted there were “many things to do” for a state to achieve the ultimate goal of becoming an EU member.

On the part of the EU, it was a politically and practically necessary step. [...] It is up to Tbilisi to take the necessary steps”, he added.

The Swedish official stressed the accession to the European Union was based on “many conditions”, and Georgia's success in this effort was “largely” depending on the Government.
