The Maritime Transport Agency of Georgia on Thursday told the Georgian Public Broadcaster search and rescue efforts were ongoing to find the sailor from the country who was reported on Wednesday to have fallen off a ship in Black Sea waters 60 nautical miles off the Romanian port of Constanța.

The Agency said the crew had immediately attempted to assist the sailor by tossing a life ring but could not assist as strong currents carried the crewmember away from the vessel.

The body noted the country’s Embassy in Romania and the Romanian maritime search and rescue organisation had confirmed the captain of the ship had “immediately informed relevant services” of the incident, sparking the rescue operation on Wednesday.

The efforts were “renewed” on Thursday, it added.
