Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili on Wednesday said his Government had taken “all possible steps” following the killing of a Georgian national by Russian occupying forces near a village adjacent to central Georgia’s occupied Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) region on Monday.

Garibashvili stressed the Government had responded to the incident by informing the country’s international partners and the European Union Monitoring Mission, and activated the hotline operated for information exchange on developments along the occupation line.

He noted a technical meeting was also arranged the same day with the participation of the EUMM and representatives of the Russian occupation forces administering the occupied Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) region.

The PM also expressed his “heartfelt condolences” to the family and relatives of Tamaz Ginturi, and said he hoped the other citizen who was illegally arrested by the forces during the same incident would be released soon.

The Government head also said the incident was a result of the occupation established after the 2008 invasion of Georgia by Russia and the war between the two states, which he called “one of the heaviest legacies and grave crimes or mistakes” left behind by the former United National Movement Government, and pledged his office would work to find solutions to the issue and ensure the outcome of a “united and unified” state.

Ginturi was killed in “firearm shots” as the occupation forces attempted to illegally detain him in the occupied territory, the State Security Service of Georgia said.
