Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili on Friday hailed the efforts of the country’s diplomats on their professional day, lauding their “important role” in "protecting national interests in the international arena" and strengthening Georgia’s reputation across the world.

Pointing to existing security challenges facing the country and the world, the FM stressed “our diplomats have a really great mission”, and added achieving the goals defined by the country’s foreign policy strategy, which he said included peaceful reintegration of the country, and integration into European and Euro-Atlantic structures, would be “impossible without proper diplomatic efforts”.

The official also highlighted the “crucial role” of Georgian missions abroad ahead of the European Union’s forthcoming decision on the country’s candidacy later this year, which he said would make Georgia’s European future “irreversible”.

Today, we have a common political agenda with the EU member states. The role of Georgian diplomacy is great in the progress that Georgia has achieved on its EU path”, he said.

Darchiashvili noted he was confident the country’s diplomatic missions would “successfully deal with their tasks, and actively participate in the peaceful and democratic development of the country and the implementation of policies focused on state interests”.
