Gov’t to allocate $185 mln for Education Ministry, $59 mln to be used on increasing teacher’s salaries - PM

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili on Friday announced his Government would allocate $185 million for the country’s Education Ministry in 2024, from which $59 million would be spent on increasing teachers’ salaries.  

In his address to the National Teacher Prize award ceremony, Garibashvili highlighted the importance of the teacher’s profession and noted a “decent and educated” generation was the “main foundation” for the country's strength, with teachers having an “immeasurably large role in the solidity and strength of this foundation”.

Garibashvili said the Government was aware of the teacher's “great merit” and noted his office along with the Education Ministry “intensively” worked to put “more efforts in raising the prestige” of the teaching profession.

He said teachers salary would be raised by ₾500 ($185) on average under the next year’s budget allocated for the Ministry.

The biggest influence on a teenager's development, thinking, awareness, defining and forming a point of view, along with the institution of the family, is you - the school, teachers and the church”, he said.

The PM stressed in order to “highlight and appreciate” teachers' “special role” in the public, the National Teacher’s Day was established on October 27, marking the birthday of Iakob Gogebashvili - Georgian educator, teacher, publicist, writer and founder of the scientific pedagogy in the country - for the first time in the country’s recent history.

He also said the teachers with a “special contribution” to the development of the public and the education system would be awarded with the National Teacher Prize and a cash prize of ₾10,000 ($3,710).

Garibashvili noted the Government's “large-scale project” worth ₾1 billion ($371 mln) launched last year, involving rehabilitation and construction of up to 1,000 schools, with rehabilitation works underway in 400 schools and 1,000 kindergartens.

“[I] had a conversation, I had a number of discussions with the Minister of Education and I know he holds intensive meetings with teachers, listens to your recommendations, visions, advice. Trust me, we will certainly take your vision into account to develop an even more effective system together with the ministry and the minister”, he told the audience.
