Cooperation between the Georgian Government and the Council of Europe, the situation in the Russian-occupied territories of the country and its European integration were discussed on Wednesday in a meeting between the Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili and Marija Pejčinović Burić, the Secretary General of the CoE.

The meeting also noted the “critical” role and importance of the organisation in relation to the country’s Russian-occupied territories, the peaceful resolution of the conflicts on Georgia’s territory and confidence-building projects.

The officials also highlighted the need to allow international mechanisms in the Russian-occupied regions and the contribution of the Council of Europe to the implementation of democratic reforms in the country.
Darchiashvili reviewed the implementation of the European Union conditions for granting the country the membership candidate status and said he hoped the Government’s efforts would be “assessed accordingly” and the country would receive the status.
