Garibashvili also said the country’s Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili had held “good meetings” in his recent visit to Brussels, where he said “quite positive signals” were voiced, and added the most recent issues noted by EU authorities about Georgia’s fulfilment of the recommendations for the status would be “completed and the process would be closed”. Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili on Thursday said the country “deserved” to be granted the European Union membership candidate status considering the reforms and progress in the efforts for achieving the objective and its challenging geopolitical situation.

Garibashvili said he had “firmly declared” to leaders of European countries that not granting Georgia the status would be “another strategic mistake” and "absolutely unacceptable and insulting” towards the country and its citizens.

The PM claimed his Government was in a “leading” position “in all directions” when compared to the fellow Associated Trio countries of Ukraine and Moldova, which, unlike Georgia, were granted the status in 2022.

The Government head said neither Ukraine nor Moldova had fulfilled “any conditions” last year while receiving the status “in advance”, and noted his Government had done “many things” throughout the past year, making the process “open and transparent”.
