Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili on Wednesday said Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili’s meetings on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York had focused on the country’s European integration, implemented reforms and “specific steps” taken by the Government in this direction.
In his remarks over the visit of the head of the Government, Darchiashvili noted the meetings involving Garibashvili served to mobilise support from the country’s international partners for Georgia to receive the European Union membership candidate status later this year.
Today, the Prime Minister held working meetings with leaders of various countries. Of course, it was about the [country’s] European integration, the reforms carried out by the Georgian Government and the specific steps that our country has taken”, Darchiashvili said.
The top Georgian diplomat stressed receiving the EU membership candidate status was “one of the most important priorities in our foreign policy”.
He also reviewed Garibashvili’s “important” meeting with Jake Sullivan, the United States National Security Advisor, and noted the Government was waiting for the arrival in the country of the new US Ambassador, who he said would “certainly bring a new impetus to further strengthening and deepening the existing cooperation between our two countries”.
