Developments over the past two months along the administrative line separating the Russian-occupied regions of Georgia from the rest of the country were discussed on Tuesday at a meeting of the Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism in Ergneti.

Irakli Antadze, the Deputy Director of the Analytical Department of the Georgian State Security Service, said release of Georgian citizens illegally detained by occupation forces along the line was discussed as the “main subject” of the meeting.

Since the previous [IPRM] meeting until today, 12 of our fellow citizens were illegally detained at the occupation line. All of them have been released and are with their families”, Antadze said.

The representatives of the Georgian Government once again raised the “principled” topic of the release of all persons in illegal detention in the occupied territories, and "strongly condemned" facts of ‘borderisation’ along the administrative line.

As of today, four of our fellow citizens are still in illegal detention. The so-called 'borderisation' is one of the main issues on our agenda. We discussed each incident. Once again, there was an active protest and non-acceptance expressed, since this process violates the fundamental rights of the local population, and their lives and health are at a daily risk”, Antadze noted.

The official added the developments along the line also involved 14 cases of ‘borderisation’ activities of occupation forces installing illegal barriers, and added the incidents had been mainly noted in Gori and Kareli municipalities of central Georgia.

He also called the process an “extremely destructive” development that “aggravates the life of the local population living on both sides of the occupation line”.
