Georgian PM launches construction of military lyceum in Tbilisi

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili on Thursday laid the symbolic foundation for the ₾40 million ($15 mln) project of building a military lyceum in the Krtsanisi district of capital Tbilisi to serve the eastern section of the country’s defence structure, the Government press office said.
The ceremony in the location also involved Defence Minister Juansher Burchuladze and Major General Giorgi Matiashvili, the Chief of the Georgian Defence Forces, with the former noting facilities of the military school would be built on a 42-hectare territory.
Burchuladze added the existing constructions in the area would be “completely reconstructed” to modern standards.

Residential and training facilities for 400 cadets, canteen and infirmary buildings, a conference hall and administrative facility, simulation centre and indoor gym will be among facilities built for the institution.
The school is seen as an educational institution that will serve the eastern part of the defence system of the country, which is structured into eastern and western commands. The latter has been served by a lyceum located in the city of Kutaisi.
While the western school has been bearing the name of General Giorgi Kvinitadze, the Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces of Georgia’s 1918-1921 democratic republic, the new facility will be named after General Giorgi Mazniashvili, another military leader of the short-lived state.
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili on Monday announced “major changes” to the country’s defence system as part of the new defence code, which includes full transition of the compulsory military service to the Ministry of Defence mandate, requirement for the state to provide accommodation for servicemembers and their families, a “more flexible” military reserve system for students and moves to prevent evasion of service.
