Vice Minister of the Chinese Ministry of Education WU Yan on Sunday said China “attributed a great importance” to the development of educational cooperation and exchange programmes with Georgia, at the unveiling ceremony of Georgian poet Shota Rustaveli’s bust at the Beijing University of Language and Culture.

In his speech, Yan expressed readiness to work with Georgia in the future to implement educational cooperation on “a wider scale” and at “a higher level”, announcing that Chinese and Georgian Education ministers Huai Jinpeng and Giorgi Amilakhvari on Monday would jointly sign a memorandum of understanding on Chinese language education in primary and secondary schools of Georgia.

He also said the parties would sign a new partnership agreement on the mutual recognition of academic qualifications and degrees to ensure “smooth cooperation” in the field of education, including the creation of multiple platforms for collaboration and the establishment of the Chinese-Georgian University Alliance.

China has “the largest education system in the world” with over 290 million students and 18 million teachers, the Vice Minister said and expressed readiness to support educational cooperation between Georgia and Hunan Province, a large and strong province in the field of education, in order to improve efficiency and effectiveness of the partnership.

Yan also said China and Georgia would cooperate in digital education, vocational training, general higher education, language teaching and other fields to “comprehensively improve” the quality and level of educational cooperation between the countries, calling Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili and Georgian delegation “the most distinguished guests to the University”.
