Gia Volski, an MP from the ruling Georgian Dream party and the Vice Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, on Saturday said Georgia was “extremely important” for China as a transit corridor to Western markets.

In his comments to the media on Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili’s ongoing visit to China, Volski noted that the transit corridor was a “strategic direction” of the Georgian Government, by which the country “has been valued as a partner in the economic field”.

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday announced the establishment of a strategic partnership with Georgia and a “new stage” in bilateral ties between the two countries in his meeting with Garibashvili on the sidelines of the Summer World University Games in Chengdu.

In his turn, Garibashvili highlighted the "importance of friendship and partnership" with China and noted his Government was “committed” to deepening trade and economic ties with Beijing.
