The Georgian Interior Ministry on Saturday said its relevant structural units “were fully controlling” the Georgian-Russian border crossing situation at the Dariali crossing point in the country’s north.

The Ministry released its statement based on the “high public interest” and emphasised there was “no increase” in the number of individuals entering or leaving the country, adding that the current situation was being “analysed” and there was “no need” to close the state border or to implement other measures.

The statement followed yesterday’s events in Russia, after Yevgeny Prigozhin, the leader of the Wagner Group, a Russian paramilitary organisation, marched his troops in Russia’s several cities on Saturday, claiming his group had seized "all military facilities" in the southern city of Rostov-on-Don and pledged to “move on to Moscow”, the international media reported.

Earlier today Russian President Vladimir Putin called the acts “treason”, pledging a harsh response and punishment to those who plan “an armed rebellion”.

The Russian National Anti-Terrorism Committee said it had declared a Counter-Terrorist Operation regime in Moscow and Voronezh regions.
