Sven Giegold, the State Secretary at the German Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, on Friday said there was “no evidence” of violations of international sanctions imposed on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine through Georgian territory.

In his remarks for local media during his visit to Georgia, Giegold noted while recent figures showed an increase in trade between Russia and Georgia,“we have no evidence of sanctions violations”.

The visiting official also stressed the importance of the country meeting the European Union conditions for granting it the membership candidate status, and the “need” to ensure independence of the domestic judiciary.

Giegold said he hoped to hear “positive news” on Georgian authorities’ work on the conditions in the coming months that would allow EU authorities to reach a positive decision on the country’s membership bid.
