Kakha Kaladze, the Secretary General of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Sunday said the Georgian-Russian border crossing situation was being controlled by the relevant structural units and in case of “any danger” the “appropriate steps” would be taken.

Kaladze was commenting on the Interior Ministry's statement yesterday, in which it said its structural units “were fully controlling” the Georgian-Russian border crossing situation at the Dariali crossing point in the country’s north.

The official noted the relevant structural units would act in the interests of the country.

Interior Ministry's statement followed the events in Russia when Yevgeny Prigozhin, the leader of the Wagner Group, a Russian paramilitary organisation, marched his troops in Russia’s several cities on Saturday, claiming his group had seized "all military facilities" in the southern city of Rostov-on-Don and pledged to “move on to Moscow”, as the international media reported.

The state body stressed there was “no increase” in the number of individuals entering or leaving the country, adding that the current situation was being “analysed” and there was “no need” to close the state border or to implement other measures.

Later on Saturday the troops of the Wagner Group, heading towards Russia’s capital, pulled back, after Prigozhin said the decision was made in order to “prevent bloodshed in Russia”.
