Georgian scientists and researchers will benefit from exchange programmes, trainings and research opportunities following a deal signed between the country’s Education Ministry and the European Organisation for Nuclear Research on Thursday.

Education Minister Giorgi Amilakhvari and Joachim Mnich, the CERN Director for Research and Computing, signed the memorandum enabling joint exchange projects, hosting of trainings to raise qualifications for Georgian professionals, and participation of engineers from the country in experimental research projects at CERN and other institutions.

In his comments on the agreement, Amilakhvari pointed out the importance of modernisation and internationalisation of science, research and technology for advancing new knowledge, promoting sustainable development and economic prosperity.

He also highlighted the significance of the domestic institutions’ “close collaboration” with CERN, noting it would give the Georgian scientific community a chance to expand and develop as well as acquire “valuable” skills and expertise.

“Our aim is to establish Georgia as a hub for significant research. Housing the Hadron Therapy Centre [in the western city of Kutaisi] and [facilitating] medical use of ionising radiation to treat tumours at Kutaisi International University have been some of the major successes of our efforts in this regard”, the Minister said.

He also expressed readiness to start discussions about Georgia's associate membership to CERN, noting a “solid” framework of cooperation would aid Georgian scientists and raise the field to a new level of development.
