Giorgi Amilakhvari, Georgia’s newly appointed Minister of Education and Science, on Monday vowed to create “dignified conditions” for teachers across the country and promote recognition of their profession.

In a presentation at the Government Administration, Amilakhvari, who replaced Mikheil Chkhenkeli in the position, pledged “active communication” with teachers, schools, university professors and students on “problems and challenges facing our field”.

He also added “immediate” reactions from the Ministry would follow their feedback on “all these issues”.

Amilakhvari also revealed additional social and financial support mechanisms would be offered to students with high academic performance.

We will certainly offer additional social and financial support mechanisms to all motivated, distinguished and successful students who show high academic performance, and support them in the process of successfully completing their education”, the Government official noted.

The new Minister said “a lot” had been accomplished in the field of education and science, where Chkhenkeli headed the state body over the past four years.

Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili presented Amilakhvari, the former Chair of the Education and Science Committee of the Georgian Parliament, in the new position on Monday.
