PM presents Giorgi Amilakhvari as new Minister of Education and Science

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili on Monday presented Giorgi Amilakhvari, the former Chair of the Education and Science Committee of the Georgian Parliament, as the country’s new Minister of Education and Science.

Announcing Amilakhvari’s succession of Mikheil Chkhenkeli in the position at the weekly Government meeting, Garibashvili said the latter had submitted his resignation request.

I would like to mention that Mikheil Chkhenkeli was a successful Minister. For four years, he served our Government, the country, and the young generation. He implemented many important projects, laid the foundation for many reforms”, the PM said. 

The head of the Government also noted Chkhenkeli would continue his work at the Kutaisi International University as the Chair of its International Advisory Board. 

“On behalf of our team, the Government, I would like to thank Mikheil Chkhenkeli for his work and wish him success in his future work”, he added.

Garibashvili called the new Minister a “very successful person” and noted his background of education received in the United States and Germany.

Giorgi Amilakhvari successfully headed the Education and Science Committee of the Parliament. A number of important initiatives are connected with him. He has been involved in the field of education for years. He knows very well the situation at all levels of education, the challenges that still remain in the education system, and I believe [...] [he] will be a successful Minister”, he noted.
