Oliver Varhelyi, the European Union Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement, on Friday extended his congratulatory message on Georgia’s Independence Day by saying the country “belongs to the EU”.
In a social media post Varhelyi said the country’s “quest for freedom has strengthened you and made you resilient. Freedom prevails over all the struggles”.
I wish all the Georgians and the Nation happy Independence Day!#Georgia belongs the European Union.

The message came following wishes extended to Georgian citizens by the country’s international partners, and symbolic gestures of landmarks across the world being illuminated in Georgian national colours.

The EU official’s post also came after Georgia’s Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili said earlier during the day a “just recognition” of Georgia’s “merits” by the EU would see the bloc grant the country its membership candidate status by the end of this year.
The annual Independence Day celebrations are being marked on Friday across Georgian cities with a programme for citizens and visitors of the country.
