Vakhtang Makharoblishvili, Georgia's Ambassador to the European Union, on Tuesday said the country’s Government was working to “open all doors” to get “as close as possible” to the bloc, in a meeting of ambassadors of Georgia to EU member states in Berlin.
Makharoblishvili said the progress achieved by the country in fulfilling the conditions set by EU institutions for granting it the membership candidate status was “positively evaluated in a number of directions” at the meeting.
He also said the Georgian Government’s first report to the European Commission, submitted within the framework of the enlargement package, had also been assessed well.
"I am sure that after today's discussions the ambassadors will return to their respective capitals with renewed efforts to get the result that our country wants by the end of the year", the official added.
Georgia is “well-prepared” to begin accession negotiations, Makharoblishvili said, noting the Commission’s analytical report, released in February, had “very directly and unequivocally” voiced the country’s orientation over the years and its efforts in both legislative and institutional rapprochement with the EU.
He stressed the “renewed” role of Georgia as a transport and transit country, amid the current geopolitical situation, and highlighted the “utmost importance” of the EU sending “relevant messages” to Georgia, as the country has been “playing a positive role” in the region.
