Bundestag delegation to review reforms, cooperation in Georgia visit

A delegation of the European Union Affairs Committee of the German Bundestag will be on a visit to Georgia between Tuesday and Friday to discuss reforms and expanding cooperation with the European Union and Germany with Georgian officials and civil society groups.
Within the framework of the visit, the German MPs will meet the Georgian Minister of Justice Rati Bregadze, the Minister of Economy Levan Davitashvili, as well as the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Teimuraz Janjalia and the Speaker of the Parliament Shalva Papuashvili, the German Embassy in Georgia said.
The visiting officials will also hold meetings with civil society groups, media, and professionals from the economy and culture sectors.
As Georgia submitted an application for membership to the European Union in March 2022 and has had the prospect of joining the EU since June 2022, the talks will concern necessary reforms and the structure of relations and cooperation between Georgia and the EU”, the Embassy said.
The Bundestag delegation includes SPD’s Christian Petry, CDU/CSU MP Ralph Brinkhaus, BÜNDNIS 90/DIE GRÜNEN politician Michael Sacher, FDP’s Thomas Hacker and AfD’s Harald Weyel.
The fruitful cooperation between the Georgian and German law enforcement, as well as prospects of future relations, was discussed on Wednesday by Georgian Interior Minister Vakhtang Gomelauri and his German counterpart Nancy Faeser. Gomelauri thanked the German side for its “continuous support” for developing the Georgian Interior Ministry’s capabilities.
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock ended her two-day official visit to Georgia later on Friday, with her Georgian counterpart Ilia Darchiashvili escorting her to the Tbilisi International Airport for the official departure ceremony.
The cooperation between Georgia and Germany, the progress on the European integration path and the implementation of the EU conditions for granting the country the membership candidate status were discussed on Friday in a meeting between the Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili and the German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock.
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, who is on her first official visit to Georgia, on Friday said Georgian citizens “belong in” the European Union and vowed her country’s support for the country’s European integration.
Georgian-German relations, priority areas of cooperation and ways of further developing them were discussed on Thursday by the Georgian Economy Minister Levan Davitashvili and members of a delegation of the European Union Affairs Committee of the German Bundestag.
Georgian Justice Minister Rati Bregadze on Thursday briefed visiting members of the Committee for European Union Affairs of the German Bundestag on his Government’s efforts to meet the 12-point conditions outlined by the EU last year for granting its membership candidate status to Georgia.
