Georgian Justice Minister Rati Bregadze on Thursday briefed visiting members of the Committee for European Union Affairs of the German Bundestag on his Government’s efforts to meet the 12-point conditions outlined by the EU last year for granting its membership candidate status to Georgia.
The Justice Ministry said the discussion had also reviewed the Government's moves and initiatives to align domestic laws with the bloc’s legal framework. The Minister told the lawmakers the Georgian Parliament was discussing a related bill and added a digital platform would also be launched “in the near future” for the purpose.
In their comments, members of the visiting delegation expressed their “very positive” impressions on the authorities’ efforts to meet the conditions for the bloc’s candidate status, and pledged their country’s support for Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic aspirations, the body said.
In another note, the Ministry commended the “close sectoral cooperation” with Germany, which the body said was particularly strengthened after Bregadze’s visit to Berlin last year and the signing of a cooperation deal covering the years 2022-2025.
The agreement included partnership for qualification training, notary services and sharing of experience, the body noted, adding a legal forum had also been set up as part of the deal that would hold its first event in Tbilisi between July 5-6.
The German MPs Christian Petry, Ralph Brinkhaus, Michael Sacher, Thomas Hacker and Harald Weyel arrived in Tbilisi on Tuesday and will depart on Friday.
