Kakha Kaladze, the Mayor of Tbilisi and the Secretary General of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Wednesday said efforts made by the Government for ensuring the country’s European integration were “visible and everyone knows this well”.
In his remarks over Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili’s visit to Brussels this week, Kaladze noted “clear statements” had been made acknowledging the “positive steps” taken by the Government on the European integration path.
“I would like to respond to the important visit of the Georgian Prime Minister to Brussels, where very interesting meetings were held both in the European Council and in the NATO headquarters. We heard clear statements about the progress and positive steps Georgia had taken on the European integration path”, Kaladze said.
The efforts made by Georgia in terms of European integration are visible and everyone knows this well. I have said it many times, and I will say it again, that we certainly deserved the [EU membership] candidate status [in 2022], but we were given a 12-point plan to be implemented [for receiving it]. We are doing everything to ensure that all steps are taken in this direction”, the ruling party official noted.
At their Brussels meeting, Garibashvil informed Charles Michel, the President of the European Council, about the efforts made by his Government in fulfilling the EU recommendations for the candidate status.
The Prime Minister emphasised the importance of the country receiving the status at the end of the year, pointing out that “most of the recommendations” for the objective had been implemented, and claiming Georgia “deserved” the outcome.
