Vakhtang Makharoblishvili, Georgia's Representative to the European Union, on Tuesday said Charles Michel, the President of the European Council, had confirmed support for the country on its path of European integration, and for associated reforms, in his meeting with Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili.
The process of Georgia's accession to the EU was discussed in the meeting on Tuesday, with Makharoblishvili calling it “interesting and substantive”.
The President of the European Council expressed his support for Georgia on the path of European integration. Charles Michel is ready to help and support our country at all stages - both in the process of implementing reforms and in the context of relations with other states within the European Union”, Makharoblishvili said.
“At the current stage, when we await the interim report of the European Commission, and later the decision of the European Council chaired by Charles Michel, a meeting of this type was extremely timely, necessary and important”, the Georgian Ambassador continued.
At their Brussels meeting, Garibashvil informed Michel about the efforts made by his Government in fulfilling the EU recommendations for granting the country the membership candidate status, the Government Administration said.
The Prime Minister emphasised the importance of receiving the membership candidate status at the end of the year, pointing out that “most of the recommendations” for the objective had been implemented, and the country “deserved” the status.
