Turkish Ambassador to Georgia Ali Kaan Orbai on Friday said his country did not recognise the Russian-occupied regions of Georgia and was not establishing official contacts with de facto authorities in them, following media reports that claimed Russia had started shipping cargo to Turkey via Georgia’s occupied northwestern region of Abkhazia.

Orbai rejected the reports and said his Government would “not allow similar contacts to be established by other entities of Turkey”.

[N]o one should doubt Turkey's firm commitment to Georgia's territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders. Turkey does not recognise the separatist regions of Georgia”, the diplomat told the local news agency ACCENT.

The Ambassador also stressed his country would continue to support the peaceful resolution of conflicts related to Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) regions of Georgia, within the principles of territorial integrity and sovereignty of “our strategic partner Georgia”.
