Police arrest western Georgian town council member for fraudulent land appropriation

Police have arrested a member of the council of the western Georgian town of Tsalenjikha with the charge of conspiracy to manufacture fraudulent papers of land ownership in the town, the State Security Service (SSS) of the country said on Monday.

The Service said Gela Abuladze of the town council had forged papers in cooperation with a representative of the mayor of the town starting in 2020, registering a 100,083 square metre land to a group of individuals in the municipality.

By submitting the forged documents to the National Agency of Public Registry, Abuladze and the town hall member handed the land worth 405,250 GEL (about $128,242/€117,080) over to relatives of the former, the SSS said.

The Service also said “all related individuals” involved in the crime were charged for the fraudulent land appropriation as part of the ongoing investigation.
