The Conference of Prosecutors in Georgia has elected three members of the 15-member Prosecutorial Council, the body tasked with selecting the country’s future Prosecutor Generals, the Prosecution Service of Georgia announced on Friday.
Aleksandre Mukasashvili, Ekaterine Kharebava and Shota Tkeshelashvili, who have been elected to the positions for the next four years, were introduced by Prosecutor General Irakli Shotadze at the Conference earlier today. Shotadze called the position of members of Prosecutorial Council a “great honour and responsibility.”
Per the legislation, out of the 15-member Council, eight participants are prosecutors elected through secret ballot at the Conference of Georgian Prosecutors. The state body said the Prosecutorial Council ensured the “independence and transparency” of the institution.
During the event, Shotadze said the members of the Council were involved in the strategic development of the Prosecutor's Office, selection of staff, promotion or disciplinary responsibilities, and the development of criminal policy.
The three new members of the Council were elected out of nine candidates nominated by initiative groups.
