It is “awkward” to talk about Georgia adopting military neutrality while both the country and the “entire world” are facing “serious challenges”, Kakha Kaladze, the Mayor of Tbilisi and Secretary General of the ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party, said on Wednesday in response to comments around the subject.

Kaladze called comments on the possibility of Georgia adopting military neutrality “damaging” and said they “hindered the peaceful and stable development” of the country.

It is very awkward to talk about this topic when the war in Ukraine is going on [and] the entire world, including our country, faces serious challenges. [This is a] country with 20 percent of its territory occupied by Russia. Such actions, such statements are damaging and hinder the peace, calm and a stable development of our country,” Kaladze told reporters.

On Tuesday, Gia Volski, the ruling party MP and Vice Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, said Georgia would not start “talking about military neutrality” in the wake of the war in Ukraine, as “a lot of energy and human life has been invested” in strengthening the country’s NATO membership path.
