Restoring Georgia’s territorial integrity by force is not planned by the Government and is “not in our interests”, Gia Volski, the ruling party MP and Vice Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, said on Friday.
Volski responded to claims by a number of non-governmental organisations that the population of the Russian-occupied territories of Georgia was “concerned” about alleged information on a possibility of a government attempt to restore control over the regions by force.
This [the claim] is not true. Our principle is unbreakable, and I want to convey it to Abkhazians, Georgians and Ossetians: we know the price of friendship [and] of love, we know the forgiveness of sins, and we look to the future. We do not want to involve young people, the next generation, in hostilities - including on this issue, it is not in our interests,” Volski said.
The security, humanitarian and human rights situation in Georgia’s Russian-occupied regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) on the backdrop of Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine were in focus of a meeting between Tea Akhvlediani, Georgia’s State Minister for Reconciliation and Civil Equality, Lasha Darsalia, the Deputy Foreign Minister, and Ruslan Abashidze, the Chairman of the Government of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia on Thursday.
It is “awkward” to talk about Georgia adopting military neutrality while both the country and the “entire world” are facing “serious challenges”, Kakha Kaladze, the Mayor of Tbilisi and Secretary General of the ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party, said on Wednesday in response to comments around the subject.
Georgia’s application for European Union membership and the ongoing war in Ukraine were discussed between Georgia’s Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili and Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz during a phone call on Tuesday.
Georgia will not start talking about military neutrality in the wake of the war in Ukraine, as “a lot of energy and human life has been invested” in strengthening the country’s NATO membership path, Gia Volski, the ruling party MP and Vice Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, said on Tuesday.
The “difficult” humanitarian and legal situation in the Russian-occupied regions of Georgia was discussed on Tuesday in a meeting between Tea Akhvlediani, Georgia’s State Minister for Reconciliation and Civil Equality, and a visiting delegation of Members of the European Parliament.
