Georgia’s Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili “has assured me” the Georgian Government is doing its best to stop the Russian aggression against Ukraine, uphold democratic values and support the freedom and sovereignty of the country, Mateusz Morawiecki, the Prime Minister of Poland, said on Thursday after his meeting with the Georgian counterpart.

There are rumours that Georgia is not fully involved in the sanctions [imposed on Russia], but the Prime Minister assured me that Georgia was doing everything possible to stop this aggression, uphold democratic values and support Ukraine and its freedom and sovereignty,” Morawiecki said.

In the meeting hosted in Georgia’s Black Sea coast city of Batumi, Morawiecki acknowledged the occupation of 20 percent of the Georgian territory by Russia, and said the 2008 Russian-Georgian war meant Georgian citizens were best-placed to understand the plight of Ukrainians.

Who will understand Ukraine better than Georgians, since [the regions of] Abkhazia and South Ossetia - this is the 20 percent [of the Georgian territory] currently occupied [by the Russian forces],” he said, adding the Russian aggression in Georgia in 2008 was “still felt”.
