Culture institutions, officials send tributes after theatre, film actor Tamar Skhirtladze dies at 93

Georgian cultural institutions, industry professionals and officials on Thursday sent their tributes to theatre and film actor Tamar Skhirtladze, who passed away on Wednesday at the age of 93.

The culture ministry paid homage to the long career of the stage and screen artist who appeared in theatre productions starting in the late 1940s and featured in films as recently as 2012.

Prime minister Irakli Garibashvili also sent his condolences to the family and friends of the actor.

Thanks to her outstanding and special talent, Tamar Skhirtladze has been remembered by many generations for putting her heart into characters beloved by everyone”, Garibashvili said. 

Skhirtladze was cast in domestic theatre productions and was part of the Marjanishvili Theatre company between 1949-1967 and Rustavi theatre between 1967-1975.

She was featured in productions created on Georgian literary works as well as stagings produced on Shakespeare’s King Lear, and more. In cinema, she was again an established presence in domestic features.

A recipient of titles including the Meritorious Artist of Georgia and the state Order of Honour, she was also named as Honourable Citizen of Tbilisi and saw a star in her name unveiled outside the city’s Marjanishvili Theatre in 2010.
