Irakli Beraia, the head of the defence and security committee of the Georgian parliament on Sunday said Javier Colomina, the NATO secretary general's special representative for the Caucasus and Central Asia, in his messages, had expressed support for Georgia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and Euro-Atlantic integration in a meeting held within the framework of the NATO parliamentary assembly in Madrid.

Georgia’s security challenges, including conventional and hybrid threats from Russia, and the country’s “significant” progress and its “ambitious” agenda on the path to Euro-Atlantic integration have been discussed in the meeting between the Georgian parliamentary delegation, headed by Beraia, and Colomina, the press service of the parliament said.
The Georgian side emphasised that they welcomed the new strategic concept of NATO, its records and the decisions of the Madrid summit, including the support measures tailored to Georgia, as well as the alliance's “adaptation to security challenges” and the strengthening of its military presence on the eastern flank.
It is necessary to implement the 2008 Bucharest summit decision, to accelerate Georgia's joining the alliance in so far as the full-fledged security of the Euro-Atlantic space is inconceivable without Georgia’s joining NATO”, Beraia said after the meeting.
Georgia has already been “acting as a responsible” member state of NATO and has proven not only its “desire but ability and very important experience” to contribute to the security of the Euro-Atlantic space, the committee head noted.

He added that against the background of increased threats and the European partners’ “endeavours” to diversify the energy supply resources and roads, Georgia’s “role and importance” to help “strengthen” the cooperation between Europe and Asia have increased and the need for Georgia to become a NATO member has enhanced.
