The Georgian government would like to see more United States involvement in the Black Sea and South Caucasus regions, given the “common interests” of the two countries, Georgian foreign minister Ilia Darchiashvili said on Thursday.

Georgia is playing an increasingly important role in forming the European security architecture of the United States. One of the clear proofs of this is the unequivocal support of Georgia's European integration in the new US national security strategy”, Darchiashvili told the parliament.

He also noted the deepening of the strategic partnership was evidenced by a number of important visits of high-level representatives of the US executive power.

“This is another demonstration of the unwavering support of the US to Georgia and emphasises the continuous involvement of the US administration in our country and in the Black Sea region in general”, he continued.

The bipartisan Georgia Support Act bill, approved by the House of Representatives, as well as the State, Foreign Operations and Related Programs bill in the US budget, and the US National Defence Authorization Act bill once again confirm that the topic of Georgia is constantly relevant on the agenda of both the executive and legislative authorities of the United States”, Darchiashvili noted.

The FM also added that on the backdrop of the current events in the Black Sea region, regional countries, including Georgia, were gaining “more and more” weight for the national security interests of the US.

Given the common interests of Georgia and the US, we would like to see more US involvement in the Black Sea and South Caucasus regions. Georgia remains a strong and reliable ally of the US”, he told lawmakers.

“The political, practical and financial assistance provided by the United States, including defence and security, trade and investment, and other key areas, is visible and clear”, he concluded in his comments.
