Azerbaijani president Ilham Aliyev on Monday said there was an “opportunity to hold consultations” between Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia, adding his government was “ready to start this format today” in case the Armenian counterparts expressed interest.

In his remarks at a joint press conference with Georgian prime minister Irakli Garibashvili, hosted as part of his visit to Georgia, Aliyev said a “new situation” had been formed between his country and Armenia following the conflict over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region, adding the resolution of the conflict required the signing of a “peace agreement”.

We have already shared five basic principles [for a deal] with Armenia and we hope that Armenia will show political will, start peace talks and sign a peace agreement with Azerbaijan. If this happens, peace will be established in the South Caucasus and new opportunities for cooperation will exist”, Aliyev said.

“Today we also have an opportunity to hold consultations between Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia, and if Armenia is ready, we will be ready to start this format today”, he continued.

Aliyev also said he was “convinced” his visit to Georgia would contribute to “further development” of relations between the two countries, stressing his country enjoyed a “strategic relationship” with Georgia.

The visiting president noted “we actively cooperate in many areas, both in an international format - within the framework of international organisations - as well as bilaterally, and we have implemented several very important projects not only for our country, but also regionally”.

“We are happy to come to your beautiful country and I am glad to be in this very beautiful place”, he told the briefing hosted in the central Mtskheta municipality, adding “the wind here reminds me of Baku - which seems to indicate that it is also welcoming us [and] I feel at home here”.
