Georgian foreign minister Ilia Darcvhiashvili on Thursday said his government was “successfully managing” to deal with “external threats” and continued to implement its “main foreign priorities” despite the “most difficult” international environment.

In his remarks to the parliament, Darchiashvili noted Georgian diplomatic services had found themselves having to work in a “special situation” this year, adding Russia's military aggression against Ukraine had created “great challenges” to the existence of the “global order”.

Despite the most difficult international environment, Georgia is successfully managing to deal with foreign political threats, is taking effective steps [and] clearly and purposefully continues to implement its main foreign political priorities that represent the historical and civilisational choice of the Georgian people”, he said in reference to European and Euro-Atlantic integration aspirations of the state.

Darchiashvili also said the Georgian foreign office had continued “actively working” to strengthen the country's sovereignty and restore territorial integrity with the support of partner countries and organisations.

With the large-scale military aggression launched by Russia against Ukraine, the security environment in the region has become particularly difficult, which creates additional challenges”, he noted.

“We spare no effort on the backdrop of this turbulent situation to actualise on the international agenda the issue of the need for a peaceful settlement of the Russia-Georgia conflict”, the minister concluded in his comments to MPs.
