The resolution adopted by the Party of European Socialists congress in Berlin is “especially important” for Georgia, which emphasises the significance of the European Union candidate status for Georgia and is a “direct appeal” to the European structures to grant the country candidate status, Irakli Kobakhidze, the chair of the ruling Georgian Dream party said on Friday.

Kobakhidze highlighted the importance of the European political family’s support to Georgia and said there was a “great” expectation that the chancellor of Germany, in his address to the congress, would support the country’s EU integration.

Irakli Chikovani, the MP from the ruling party, also made comments on the adopted resolution and said it stipulated that all three states - Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine - which had expressed their “readiness” and “desire” to become EU members, should be supported on their integration path.

Chikovani stressed Georgia has been particularly marked out in the resolution and expressed his hope that, together with the country’s partners, everything would be done to achieve Georgia’s accession to the EU.

The ruling Georgian Dream party delegation, led by Kobakidze, has been participating in the international congress in Berlin from Friday to Saturday, which features high-ranking European politicians marking the anniversary of the PES.
