Georgian parliament speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Saturday said the resolution, adopted by the Party of European Socialists congress in Berlin, has been “another proof” that Georgia has been enjoying “great support” in Europe on its European Union integration path.

Papuashvili said the Georgian parliament has been “actively” working on the implementation of the 12-point conditions established by the European Council for granting the country the membership candidate status, and “as soon as” the conditions would be fulfilled, Georgia would have support to move to the “next stage” of integration into the EU.

The parliament speaker also assessed the participation of the Georgian parliamentary delegation and bilateral meetings within the framework of the 145th Inter-Parliamentary Union assembly in Rwanda as “important” and “fruitful”.

Papuashvili noted that in addition to the participation and discussions within the assembly, they had also met with the parliament chairs of 20 countries and among them with the representatives of the countries that have “still” refrained from supporting the resolution on internally displaced persons of Georgia at the United Nations, while expressing hope the meetings would have results and next time, the UN general assembly would adopt the mentioned resolution with the support of these countries.

This [supporting the resolution] is the very instrument that every country, regardless of its size, has as its one voice, which can be used at the UN general assembly and state its own position regarding the Russian aggression and the occupied territories of Georgia, as well as the rights of internally displaced persons to return home”

Papuashvili also emphasised that the importance of maintaining the non-recognition policy of Georgia’s Russian-occupied regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) has been confirmed by “all countries”.

The task of parliamentary diplomacy is to convince our colleagues through personal contacts and conversations about the importance of support", the parliament speaker said.
