One year since Batumi building collapse, Georgia commemorates victims of tragedy

One year has passed since the residential building collapsed in Georgia’s Black Sea city of Batumi on October 8 causing the death of nine.

Family members of the deceased, ordinary citizens and representatives of the Adjara government,  as well as the employees of the emergency management service, doctors and representatives of all agencies, which had been involved in the search and rescue works, came to the place of the tragic collapse to commemorate the victims.

Batumi city hall announced that a memorial would open to commemorate the victims of the tragedy, and said a new residential building would be built on the site for the affected persons, adding an examination had been conducted on the adjacent buildings and the strengthening works had been carried out.

Three persons had been charged by the prosecutor’s office for the violation of safety regulations during the construction works in the residential building, including the owner of the apartment on the first floor and two workers employed in the same apartment who had been carrying out repair works.
