FM: gov’t continuing efforts for “significant contribution” to security, peace in South Caucasus

Georgian foreign minister Ilia Darchiashvili on Monday said the government was continuing its efforts to make a “significant contribution” to the strengthening of security and peace in the South Caucasus region.
Darchiashvili noted the involvement of prime minister Irakli Garibashvili in reaching an “important” recent agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan on exchanging prisoners of war from the conflict in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region, stressing “this is already a specific, tangible result we got”.
Last year, during the session of the [UN] general assembly, the prime minister spoke openly about the peaceful neighbourhood policy of our [government], and just a few months ago, Georgia hosted the foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan within the framework of this declared policy”, he noted.
Darchiashvili stressed his government was ready to be involved in mediation between Armenia and Azerbaijan if it became “necessary”.
We are always ready to do so, and there are no preconditions from our side - our main goal is peace and stability in our region”, he concluded.
The United Nations secretary general has “positively assessed” the policy pursued by the Georgian government and prime minister for strengthening peace and stability in the region, Georgian foreign minister Ilia Darchiashvili said on Monday.
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili said Georgia supports a dialogue in the region aimed to ensure long-lasting peace and stability while meeting with Armenian head of police Vahe Ghazaryan in Tbilisi earlier today.
US president Joe Biden has congratulated Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on victory in the parliamentary elections and stated that Armenian prisoners’ safe return with Georgia’s support after the war with Azerbaijan ‘will be an important basis for further regional cooperation.’ Nikol Pashinyan’s political party Civil Pact won the snap parliamentary elections in Armenia in late June which were scheduled due to the political crisis caused by the war with Azerbaijan.
Azerbaijan has released 15 Armenian citizens through the facilitation of Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili and the United States Acting Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs Philip Reeker.
Georgian foreign minister Ilia Darchiashvili on Monday highlighted Türkiye’s support for Georgia’s NATO integration, calling the Turkish government an “outstanding supporter” in the goal.
Vedant Patel, the deputy spokesperson of the United States department of state, on Wednesday said there was “no greater supporter” than the US for the sovereignty and independence of Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan.
