Rehabilitation of roads continues in western Georgia, where about 600 kilometres of roads are planned to be updated this year, the Georgian Infrastructure Minister Irakli Karseladze said on Tuesday.

Karseladze said that rehabilitation of an 11km section of Gomi-Sachkhere-Chiatura road will be completed in September. In addition, works are underway in 16 different parts of the road which are damaged as a result of landslides.

The road is part of the 32.5 Gomi-Sachkhere-Chiatura-Zestaponi road that connects the high mountainous climatic summer resort of Gomi in the Guria region to Zestaponi, a municipality in the Imereti region.

In total ₾69 million ($23.47mln) will be spent on the project.

The Gomi-Sachkhere-Chiathura-Zestafoni road is one of the main alternatives of the Rikoti Pass section on the East-West Central Highway, and its proper operation is of great importance for the continuous movement of local and transit transport. In addition, this road connects three municipalities with each other and the villages adjacent to the road with the district center", Karseladze said.

The Minister also spoke about the 19km Rupoti-Sazano-Alisubani-Tuzi-Kvatsikhe-Katskhi road and said that the first 12km section of the road is already operational. Karseladze said that the road will connect Terjola and Chiatura municipalities in the shortest way.

The total cost of the project is ₾16,443,900 ($5,593,163).
