The first and the fourth sections of the Samtredia-Grigoleti road in Georgia’s west, under the E60 highway, will open this year, Georgian Infrastructure Minister Irakli Karseladze announced on Wednesday.

The road starts at km 42 of the Zestaponi-Kutaisi bypass-Samtredia road at river Ochopa and the Black Sea coastline Grigoleti area, and ends at river Supsa in western Georgia’s Guria province. The project for modernising the road is being implemented in four sections and aims to improve the capacity for increased traffic flows, ensure road safety and uninterrupted transit traffic.

Karseladze said it was "a challenging project" both in terms of geological conditions and with three terminated contracts over the initiative, but added the two sections of the road would be completed in 2022.

"As a result, the opening of the first section will create the possibility that 86 km of the road will be a four-lane highway. Also, we plan to complete 11 kilometres of the Grigoleti-Kobuleti [seaside] road this year, and three kilometres next year," he added.
