New 51-km road connecting Georgian regions of Zemo Imereti-Racha opens today

A 51-kilometer road connecting the two Georgian regions of Zemo Imereti and Racha has opened today, shortening the distance between the two regions by 80 km and reducing travelling time by 1.5 hours.
The new road starts from the Sachkhere village and passes through Sareki, Kvemo Khevi, Uzunta, Shkmeri, Bokva, Kvashkhieti and Zudali villages. Finally the road joins the Ambrolauri-Oni road, which is 20 km away from the city of Ambrolauri and 5 km from the city of Oni.

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili said that thanks to the new road now it will be possible to travel from the Georgian capital city of Tbilisi to the Racha region in about three hours.
This is a very comfortable road for our citizens, the population of Racha, the population of Upper Imereti and our tourists and vacationers", Garibashvili said.
Construction of the new road was financed from the budget and its cost exceeded over 111 million GEL.
The first 2 km two-lane section of the Rikoti Highway, a mountain pass which divides Georgia into its eastern and western parts, has opened today, announces the Ministry of Infrastructure. Georgian Infrastructure Minister Irakli Karseladze said that currently traffic is open on two lanes of a 2 km four-lane section, while the construction of a parallel two-lane road is underway.
Why it is important for Georgia?
Construction of the longest tunnel in Georgia, 9-km long and 15-m in width Kvesheti-Kobi tunnel, has started today, announces the Ministry of Infrastructure. The tunnel will be carved with the tunnel boring machine which was specially made for the construction of the Kvesheti-Kobi tunnel. The Kvesheti-Kobi tunnel starts at Tskere village and ends at Kobi village, and will pass under Jvari pass. Overall, construction of 2-lane 23 km long asphalt-concrete road, five bridges and five tunnels is planned on Kvesheti-Kobi road, including renovation of one more tunnel.
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili stated that the travel time from Tbilisi to Batumi will be just three hours by 2024 after the construction of 96 bridges and 53 tunnels will be completed on the Rikoti Pass. Currently the trip takes between five-six hours. Garibashvili noted that projects of such scale and complexity have not been implemented in the country.
The European Investment Bank has provided an additional €106.7 million to upgrade two sections of Georgia's East-West (E60) highway, the country’s main road artery, and extend the motorway to the borders with Azerbaijan and Armenia.
The Prime Minister of Georgia has instructed regional governors to have "maximum communication" with their local constituents, in a meeting on Monday that reviewed ways to ensure the needs and priorities of locals are addressed in a timely manner.
