PM urges "maximum communication" with local population in meeting with regional governors

The Prime Minister of Georgia has instructed regional governors to have "maximum communication" with their local constituents, in a meeting on Monday that reviewed ways to ensure the needs and priorities of locals are addressed in a timely manner.
In the meeting with local governors, Irakli Garibashvili discussed ongoing and planned projects for regions, stressing the importance of urgency in completing initiatives.
These included designating a particular attention to implementation of “priority projects”, the head of the Georgian government noting the role of local authorities as “crucial” in the process.
The initiatives for provinces reviewed in the meeting included the Renewed Regions programme, as well as quality water supply in certain municipalities, and regulation of internal road infrastructure.
The largest share of annual gross domestic product (GDP) of Georgia by region is held by the capital city of Tbilisi with 50.5%, followed by the regions of Adjara (8.9%) and Imereti (8.4%), the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat) reports.
A 51-kilometer road connecting the two Georgian regions of Zemo Imereti and Racha has opened today, shortening the distance between the two regions by 80 km and reducing travelling time by 1.5 hours. The new road starts from the Sachkhere village and passes through seven villages. Finally the road joins the Ambrolauri-Oni road.
Why it is important for Georgia?
Construction of the longest tunnel in Georgia, 9-km long and 15-m in width Kvesheti-Kobi tunnel, has started today, announces the Ministry of Infrastructure. The tunnel will be carved with the tunnel boring machine which was specially made for the construction of the Kvesheti-Kobi tunnel. The Kvesheti-Kobi tunnel starts at Tskere village and ends at Kobi village, and will pass under Jvari pass. Overall, construction of 2-lane 23 km long asphalt-concrete road, five bridges and five tunnels is planned on Kvesheti-Kobi road, including renovation of one more tunnel.
Travellers heading from the Georgian capital city of Tbilisi further east to Kakheti region are now able to drive along a new bypass road that skirts the town of Gurjaani and the six villages of Bakurtsikhe, Kolagi, Dziroki, Chandari, Vejini and Chumlaki.
Georgia’s prime minister Irakli Garibashvili has named transforming the country’s into a regional hub as one of the “main priorities” of his government, while launching the New Poti Seaport, a $93 million construction project in Georgia’s largest Black Sea harbour on Saturday.
The former head of the Analytical Directorate in the Georgian Intelligence Service, Givi Tumanishvili, was appointed Chief of Staff of the National Security Council by Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili earlier today.
