Effectiveness of existing coronavirus vaccines available in Georgia and the importance of vaccination were pointed out by Amiran Gamkrelidze, the Head of the Georgian National Centre for Disease Control, on Thursday, amid an increase in the daily number of Covid-19 cases in the country.
In an interview with local media outlet Interpressnews, the health official highlighted the effectiveness of booster shots, including second booster jabs, adding “the only prevention” of a “bad autumn scenario” would be a “high immune layer” in the public. He told IPN an immune level of about 85 percent had been reached in March, with the figure now potentially standing below 60 percent.
Gamkrelidze said daily cases had been on the rise for the past two weeks, with 621 new confirmed cases on Wednesday - a figure he called “serious”. The positivity rate for cases in Georgia had reached almost five percent, he also pointed out.
Despite the surging daily cases, Gamkrelidze noted the workload of hospitals was not high and amounted to seven to eight percent.
Georgian health authorities reported 2,570 new cases of Covid-19 over the past week, with the figure for weekly confirmed cases over the previous weeks also featuring an upward trend. The number of total weekly cases has increased from 546 to 1,058 within three weeks.
A total of 1,271,642 people were fully vaccinated in the country as of Tuesday, amounting to 44.9 percent of the adult population, while 255,928 have received booster shots of the vaccine.
