Face mask requirement in Georgian public transport removed starting next week

Wearing a face mask in public transport will no longer be mandatory across Georgia starting June 20, the Health Ministry announced on Thursday. 

The state body noted the Government had made the decision based on recommendations of the Ministry and medical professionals, considering the current “stable epidemiological situation”.

Wearing face masks remains mandatory in hospitals, while their use in public transport and “other crowded spaces” will remain a recommendation, Tamar Gabunia, the Deputy Health Minister, was cited as saying by the Ministry. 

The requirement for wearing face masks outdoors was lifted in Georgia on March 28 while it had remained mandatory in public transport and medical facilities. 

A total of 515 cases of coronavirus and three deaths were registered in Georgia last week, with a positivity rate for seven days standing at 0.51 percent. 

Overall, 269,337 people have been fully vaccinated in the country as of Tuesday - amounting to 44.2 percent of the country’s adult population - while 254,349  have received booster shots of the vaccine.
