Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili on Tuesday said his Government’s policy involved restoring territorial integrity and sovereignty over the Russian-occupied region of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) through peaceful negotiations.

Speaking at the ongoing Qatar Economic Forum in Doha, Garibashvili highlighted to the audience Georgia had defended itself from conflicts involving Russia three times over the past 30 years.

In 2008 we experienced a full-scale war [with Russia]. In the 90s, when Georgia regained its independence [from the Soviet Union], the country had two wars in our breakaway regions of Abkhazia and [South] Ossetia. Russians at that time were helping these separatis groups”, he told a panel of the Forum.

Our Government’s policy is to restore territorial integrity and sovereignty through peaceful negotiations”, the head of the Georgian Government said.

Garibashvili also responded to a question about Georgian authorities’ official contacts with their Russian counterparts by saying that the ruling Georgian Dream party had not had “any direct contact” with the Russian President since coming to power in 2012.

There have been no political consultations [with Russia], only economic and trade relationships exist”, he concluded in his comments.
